Case: $267,916 Awarded To Man Injured In Car Wreck Home | Contact Us
Brad Jewitt, 30, of Savannah has been awarded $267,916 in damages by a Chatham State Court jury for injuries received in a 1987 wreck that occurred after he accepted a ride from a drunk driver. Damages were returned against Karen Mananez, 28, of Perth Amboy, N.J., who was visiting Savannah at the time. Jewitt, represented by attorneys Charles R. Ashman and Jeff Lasky, sued for damages in excess of $10,000.

The jury awarded $446,916 in the case, but decided that Jewitt was 40 percent at fault for accepting the ride with a driver he should have known had too much to drink. They reduced the award by that amount. Jewitt accepted a ride from Ms. Mananez on Sept. 22, 1987, after meeting her at the Sports Page Lounge, 10419 Abercorn Extension. The woman hit a pole and wrecked her Subaru on Middleground Road. Jewitt suffered a fractured skull.

Testimony showed that Jewitt rode a motorcycle to the lounge, but that friends told him to get a ride home because they were afraid he had too much to drink. Ms. Mananez’s blood-alcohol level was 0.14 percent and was taken by police because they feared Jewitt might not survive. A 0.12 percent is considered driving under the influence in Georgia.
